The New York City TLC was created in 1971. The mission of this agency is to insure all New Yorkers and visitors have plentiful and adequate access to taxi cabs, car service and commuter vans. It is the most active T&LC in the United States, regulating approximately 13,657 medallions, over 50,000 vehicles and approximately 100,000 drivers. The T&LC is responsible for Licensing and regulating New York City's medallion (yellow) taxicabs, For-Hire vehicles (community-based liveries and black cars), commuter vans, paratransit vehicles (ambulettes) and luxury limousines.
